Violence Against Women Awareness Month
Women Make Movies wrote to us and we felt we needed to share this with you:
According to a recent Amnesty International Report STOLEN SISTERS:
DISCRIMINATION AND VIOLENCE AGAINST INDIGENOUS WOMEN IN CANADA, more than 500
Indigenous women in the past 20 years have been murdered or gone missing in
circumstances suggesting violence. And no one has taken notice.

As part of Women Make Movies’ Violence Against Women Awareness Month this
October, we’re releasing the powerful FINDING DAWN
http://www.wmm.com/filmcatalog/pages/c725.shtml, the first documentary of its
kind to shed light on this forgotten, overlooked, too-often unknown epidemic of
immunity and violence against Indigenous women along our northern border.
Through testimonies from survivor-activists, victims’ families, and members
of Aboriginal communities, Mètis filmmaker Christine Welsh breaks the silence
around this issue. View clips here: http://citizen.nfb.ca/finding-dawn-clip-1.
“Going way beyond stereotypes of native women as victims, it presents the real
stories of native women who are actively engaged in making changes on and off
reserve.” - Kevin Griffin/ The Vancouver Sun

“One in 3 women may suffer from abuse and violence in her lifetime. This is an appalling human rights violation.
We can put a stop to this.
UNIFEM’s campaign Say NO to Violence against Women invites people to add their names to an ever-growing movement of people around the world who raise their voice and demand decisive action on ending violence against women. As UNIFEM’s Goodwill Ambassador, I was the first to sign on. The signatures will be handed over to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, as strong supporter of our cause, to strengthen the United Nations’ efforts to fulfil women’s right to a life free of violence.
So please join me. ADD YOUR NAME TO THE CAMPAIGN.”
